How to track your net worth
Updated
Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Add cash, investments and property, subtract loans and card balances, and write down the date. The trend matters more than the number.

What counts as an asset
- Cash and savings, in every currency.
- Investments at their latest market value.
- Your home and car at a conservative value.
- Money others owe you.
What counts as a liability
- The remaining principal on a mortgage and other loans.
- Card balances, billed and not yet billed.
- Instalments still to pay.
Worked example
| Item | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Checking and savings | $24,000 |
| Index funds | $38,000 |
| Home, conservative value | $420,000 |
| Total assets | $482,000 |
| Mortgage principal | −$310,000 |
| Card balances | −$2,400 |
| Net worth | $169,600 |
Example figures show the method only.
Tracking it in Fullgrove
Fullgrove's Home is a balance sheet: assets, liabilities and net worth side by side, by account type or asset class, converted to the currency you choose. Allocation lets you set a target mix and shows a range of possible yearly returns from the assumptions you enter. Those are calculations from assumptions, not forecasts or advice.
Predictions and suggestions
- Budgets show today's pace and a month-end estimate, with a suggested budget you can adopt.
- Goals project with the expected return you set.
- Account folders can be suggested by the model and rearranged by you.
Ask “how much did we spend on food this month?” and every number in the answer is computed from your ledger; an answer with any other number is rejected. Parsing and categories run on your iPhone; Premium's longer answers can use Apple Private Cloud Compute, which you can turn off.
Calculate your net worth
- List every account and asset with today's value.
- Convert foreign currency and investments to one currency.
- List every loan's remaining principal and every card balance.
- Subtract liabilities from assets, note the date, and repeat monthly.
